IFP Chicago members are part of the voting body that selects the Spirit Award winners. This year's nominated films span a diverse range of subjects, styles and genres, helmed by breakout newcomers and independent stalwarts alike. This diversity is also reflected in the nominated artists themselves - 32% of nominees are women, 34% are people of color. This year's awards also mark the first time that transgender actors have been nominated for awards in both female lead and supporting female categories in the same year. (Kitana Kiki Rodriguez and Mya Taylor for Tangerine.)
"In a year that has been defined by conversations surrounding representation and the lack of opportunity for women and people of color in the film industry, this year's nominees illustrate the powerful contributions that filmmakers from diverse backgrounds are already making to independent cinema." said Nicole Bernardi-Reis, IFP Chicago Board President. "We want to celebrate this, while also recognizing that we all have a part in changing the conversation."
Chicago has a number of outstanding organizations dedicated to developing and supporting authentic voices and diverse stories. IFP Chicago is offering a discounted rate to their members, with the hopes that this celebration can spark deeper conversations and collaborations.
